Snowmobile Etiquette

  • Quiet hours are from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM—please be respectful of fellow guests.
  • Observe posted speed limits: 25 mph in town and 15 mph in school zones.
  • Ride responsibly—avoid trespassing on private property and respect all wilderness boundaries.

The Cooke City Chamber of Commerce site links to a snowmobile trails map. This map is not as detailed as the US Forest Service map, but it does have descriptions of the trails.

Avalanche Information


Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center

The single best source for avalanche information in our area is the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center. Here you can get specific avalanche forecasts for the Cooke City area. You can also get current weather information from Lulu Pass, Fisher Creek, and Monument Peak. In addition, the site has a wealth of educational materials regarding avalanches, including online tutorials and articles

Friends of the GNFAC

The Facebook page for Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center (GNFAC) has up-to-date posts describing current avalanche conditions near Cooke City and the surrounding areas.

Like the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center site, they also provide educational materials and information regarding avalanche safety.

National Avalanche Center

The National Avalanche Center site pulls together avalanche forecast information from a number of forecast centers. Its members work with the American Avalanche Association and the US Forest Service National Avalanche Center to provide comprehensive avalanche information and education.

Upper Yellowstone Snowmobile Club

The Upper Yellowstone Snowmobile Club provides information and support for the snowmobile community in Cooke City. Club members carry out grooming operations on the area's trails, and the club actually owns its own groomer. You can visit their website and their Facebook page for more information about the club and about snowmobiling in the Cooke City area.
